A hive is different from a swarm. Once bees settle in one place and start building comb, they are not going to move on by themselves. In North Lakes, hives turn up in wall cavities, roof spaces, garden sheds, old compost bins, stacked pots and hollow trees. The longer a hive stays, the bigger the comb and the colony tend to get.
You will usually notice a steady line of bees flying in and out of the same gap every day. There may be a hum inside a wall, a few bees inside the house, or a dark stain where honey has seeped through. The crew looks at the hive and works out how to reach it. That might be simple for a hive in a bin or shed, or it might mean opening some wall lining or lifting roof tiles. They explain the options for your home before anything is opened. Patching plaster or tiles may be a separate job for a builder, and the crew will tell you if so. A hive removal may include:
- Finding the entry point and the edges of the comb
- Opening access where needed, after you agree
- Removing the bees, comb and honey the crew can reach
- Cleaning out wax and honey so it does not drip or smell
- Advice on sealing the gap and patching the access
